In summer, the best time to take a photo of Piazza San Marco in Venice is before 7am. It will start to get more crowded around 8am. We can’t speak for other seasons. The street lights were still on before 6am in summer and no one was in the piazza. Great time for photos without people! Calm and quiet. Definitely get up at 6 if you want a photo opportunity!

After 6 am and before 7am, the sky began to brighten and the street lights were off. People started to show up in the plaza. Still great for pictures.

After 7am, this was pretty much what we have seen for our entire stay: PEOPLE EVERYWHERE. No photo opportunities unless you like them with lots of unknown people in the background.
