After hiking, we went back to our kayaks to get our snorkeling gear. Then we got into the warm water and started snorkeling. The water was very clear and it got colder as you got closer to the ocean. We saw mangroves growing by the shore of the water.

If you snorkel by the shore, you will have a better chance to see fish. There were also little tiny fish that swam in big groups. They aren’t too hard to spot and they look like rainbows.

We also saw a sunken boat. Many fish hid underneath the boat. After that I found some debris that might have come from the boat. There were some fish here, but not as many as were by the boat.

I saw many types of fish, both long and short, as well as a tiny blue one that was very difficult to spot. Most of the fish blended in and you have to really peel your eyes to see them, but the ones that I saw made me want to take a picture immediately.

It was thrilling and fun to snorkel and see all of that wildlife. Keep in mind that it is very difficult to take pictures because you can’t really see the camera with the snorkel gear on, so when taking a picture use the big rocks or pieces of stuff laying on the sea floor to help locate the fish and take the picture.

After snorkeling, we headed back to our kayaks and paddled back to the Virgin Islands Ecotours’ dock. While we were waiting to turn in the kayak, we spotted barnacles growing on the dock as well as a little crab crawling around.

We got out of our kayaks and dried off. Then we waited for the bus to take us back to our ship. We had a lot of fun and I think you would like it too.

On this tour, I learned how important the mangroves are to protecting the island from the erosion and providing shelter for marine life in this coastal ecosystem.
