I was looking forward to our visit to Sint Maarten because it is the home of the steepest zipline in the Caribbean, the Flying Dutchman!
We visited the island of Sint Maarten. The island is split into two parts, the Dutch side and the French side. The Dutch side is called Sint Maarten and the French side is called Saint Martin. Don’t worry if it’s confusing because both sides are gorgeous.
Everything about the Flying Dutchman was exciting. You start off at an old plantation and board two chairlifts up to the top of a rocky mountain. The ride up takes about 20 minutes. The view from the top was absolutely beautiful in every direction. Looking South, you see Phillipsburg. Looking North you see Saint Martin, the airport, the harbor and beaches.
The day we were there, it was rainy on and off and very windy. The shriek of the wind in the ziplines was like a howling banshee and it made an already exciting wait even more thrilling. They line you up in sets of four since there are four ziplines. Everyone gets the right safety equipment and all the staff seemed to be well trained on the equipment and procedures.
It was such a thrill. I was sitting in my harness and they opened the safety gate. There was nothing between us and the bottom of the hill except a thousand feet of elevation. What a fun and beautiful ride. I would have been happy to ride all day, even with the wet weather.
Take a look at my video going down the Flying Dutchman.
If you ever get to Sint Maarten, or Saint Martin π, give this ride a try. King Hop gives it four carrots!
