I tasted Puerto Rican mallorca for the first time in Old San Juan. I fell in love with this soft sweet bread right away!
Puerto Rican mallorca is a coil shaped, soft, sweet and buttery bread. It is a traditional Puerto Rican breakfast food. We tried it toasted with sugar and butter on top at La Bombonera in Old San Juan. It was really good! I saw a giant mallorca in the display case of La Bombonera. It was about 16 times as big as a regular size mallorca. I wish we bought the giant mallorca at the time for breakfast the next day!

La Bombonera have been in Old San Juan since 1902. It is a bakery and a cafeteria. The front part of La Bombonera is the bakery section and the back portion is the cafe restaurant.
During our stay in Old San Juan, we went back to La Bombonera several times to get more mallorcas and try other pastries. Their mallorcas sold out most of the days in the afternoons. We also have tasted mallorcas from other places, but they can’t compare to ones from La Bombonera. We didn’t get to try their breakfast because it was always full when we walked in.
If you just want to buy pastries to go, you don’t need to stay in line for the cafe restaurant. You could walk directly up to the counter where the refrigerated section is and someone will take your bakery to go order there.
We have been missing the taste of mallorcas since we came back from Puerto Rico and we decided to make them by ourselves! We followed the recipe on The Noshery. Although we are not good at baking, our first homemade mallorcas turned out pretty good! Our homemade mallorcas tasted a little denser and more bready than what we remembered from La Bombonera, where their mallorcas were more fluffy. However, these are the best mallorcas we might have until we visit Purto Rico again!
If you ever visit Puerto Rico, Puerto Rican mallorca from La Bombonera in Old San Juan is a must try!
