I tasted delicious local eats in Guanxi Taiwan. Guanxi is a town in Hsinchu, Taiwan. We stopped by Guanxi for lunch/dinner on our way back from camping in Jianshi.

Egg Cake

These are little cakes that are shaped like grapes. The hot iron that was used to bake the cakes, shapes them like a bunch of grapes. Their texture and taste are between pancakes and macaroons. They come with many different flavors. We tried chocolate, cheese, and green tea.

Beef Roll

The beef roll contains not only beef, but also vegetables and green onions. The ingredients are fried on a flat grill and then are rolled into a freshly-made soft thin green onion flatbread. It is very tasty and filling.

Grass Jelly

Grass jelly is made out of a herb of the mint family, Platostoma palustre. Platostoma plaster is commonly known as Chinese mesona. This herb grows extensively in south east Asia, including Taiwan. Grass jelly is black colored with a jelly-like consistency. It has somewhere between no flavor and a slightly bitter flavor, just by itself. It can be made into all kinds of different sweet desserts or seasoned dishes (not sweet). There are grass jelly drinks, grass jelly desserts with red beans, mung beans, or nuts, grass jelly cubes, and grass jelly chicken soup. It is a very common summer treat in Taiwan.ย

I tried some grass jelly tea, grass jelly desserts with red beans, mung beans, and peanuts, grass jelly cubes, and grass jelly chicken soup. My favorite is the sweetened desserts. The chicken soup is my second favorite. Iโ€™m not a big fan of unsweetened grass jelly drinks or cubes, but I heard they are good for your heath if they are unsweetened.

There are many other attractions and local eats in Guanxi Taiwan. We only stopped for lunch/dinner on our way back to Taipei and our stomachs can only fit so much food. I would like to visit Guanxi again and try out all other local eats that I didnโ€™t try this time!
