Our favorite food in Hiroshima was Hiroshima okonomiyaki (Oh-ko-no-me-yah-key). An okonomiyaki is a pancake like dish with all kinds of different toppings. Different regions have different styles of okonomiyaki. Hiroshima style is one of the varieties.
The Hiroshima okonomiyaki usually includes pancake batter, lots of cabbages (King Hop likes cabbages), some green onions or herbs, some seafood, meat, and/or cheese, noodles (soba or udon), an egg on top, and tons of flavorful okonomiyaki sauce. The coolest part about okonomiyaki is that it is like a cooking demonstration because they cook it layer by layer in front of you on a giant grill. An okonomiyaki is pretty filling.
We tried a couple okonomiyaki places, Okonomi-mura and Nagata-ya. Both were really good.
Okonomi-mura
5-13 Shintenchi, Naka Ward, Hiroshima, Hiroshima Prefecture 730-0034, Japan
Okonomi-mura is not one single restaurant. It is a multi-store building with a collection of okonomiyaki restaurants. All of them look very good. We randomly picked one. I wish I had more than one stomach to try them all!
Nagata-ya
Japan, 〒730-0051 Hiroshima Prefecture, Hiroshima, Naka Ward, Otemachi, 1 Chome−7−19 重石ビル
Nagata-ya is near the peace park and A-bomb dome. It is located by the ferry terminal across the bridge from the peace park. Not only the location of Nagata-ya is convenient but also their okonomiyaki is tasty. One of their secrets is the sauce.
We got a recommendation of Hassho. However, Hassho was closed when we finally found it, so we didn’t get to try their okonomiyaki (sob).
If you ever visit Hiroshima, the Hiroshima okonomiyaki is a must try!
