Moon Valley of the Atacama desert is the place on earth where you can see a landscape that looks as if you are on the moon.
Moon Valley is only 8 miles away from San Pedro de Atacama downtown. You can easily get to Moon Valley from San Pedro de Atacama on a bike.
The name of Moon Valley is from its interesting landscape with a range of color and texture. This landscape combines various stone, sand, and mineral formations carved by wind and water. It looks somewhat like the surface of the moon.
The entrance of Moon Valley exhibits a few display rooms. There is a small scale Moon Valley model in one room. There are also mineral stone displays in another room.
There is a salt flat in Moon Valley and most of Moon Valley is also covered by layers of salt. If you look closer, you will find salt crystal under the formations. Because of different levels of saline contained in the sand, rocks, and clay, there were many formations scattered around the salt flat and some look like artistic sculptures.
Climbing up the hills, you will find why Moon Valley is called Moon Valley,Β endless and deserted.Β My favorite view spot of Moon Valley is on the hill ridge.
