During my stay, I spotted many authentic shops in Venice. However, Venice is like a labyrinth. If we saw an interesting shop and thought to come back to it, chances were high that we would never find it again. We quickly learned to always walk into a store that we were interested in. Otherwise, we may never see it again.
Here are some authentic shops in Venice that I recommend you stepping into when you pass by.
Barchetta di Carta
This is a small shop of an artist, Maria Mariano. It sells the artist’s illustrations on prints or on different objects, like T-shirts. The artist’s illustrations are very sweet. I didn’t see another store like it during my one week in Venice. I got a T-shirt with a gondolier mouse on it. It is one of my favorite T-shirts. It reminds me of Venice every time I wear it.

Fabris Giuliana
This fabric shop has been in Venice since 1925. We passed by the shop by chance and we are glad that we walked in. Their wall tapestries are very well made and they are great souvenirs and gifts. We got one for ourselves and one as a gift to family. Our tapestry is hanging on our wall in the library.

Charta
This bookbinding shop seemed to be closed most of time when we were in Venice. We stayed very close to this shop and only have seen it opened for one half day in a week. It offers beautiful hand-made book covers, storybook illustrations, bookmarks, and other stationary. I especially like their illustration of a rabbit with a vegetable crown. It fits the description of King Hop.

There are many authentic shops in Venice. Most of them are located in an small alley that is not easy to find for tourists who are unfamiliar with Venice. If you spot one and are somewhat interested in what they offer, I recommend that you walk in at once. Chances are good that you won’t find the shop again if you miss it. Also, buying from authentic shops in Venice is a great way to support the local economy in Venice (read my article “Support Venice”)!
