Sampling Puerto Rican chocolate at Chocobar Cortés in Old San Juan is a must do for foodies when visiting Puerto Rico.
Cortés is a Caribbean chocolate company based in the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. Chocobar Cortés, owned by the Cortés family, provides a full menu of dishes made with chocolate (or seasoned with chocolate), various chocolate drinks, and all kinds of Cortés chocolate bars in Old San Juan.
We had breakfast at Chocobar Cortés one morning. The restaurant was full of people, but we were seated pretty quickly. One wall of the restaurant is decorated with chocolate bar molds. There is a large bar for making chocolate drinks and a kitchen in the middle.
We ordered a chocolate waffle, mousse de yogurt, and avocado toast, along with different chocolate drinks. It is not hard to imaging how chocolate is used in chocolate waffles and mousse de yogurt. It was somewhat puzzling to me how chocolate is used in avocado toast. The manager explained that chocolate powder is used in avocado toast as seasoning. Go figure!
The traditional hot chocolate drink, Puertorriqueño, is a must try at Chocobar Cortés. This Puerto Rican hot chocolate has a rich taste and is sweeter than other hot chocolate that I’ve had. Along with the hot chocolate drink, small pieces of chocolate and cheese are also provided. We learned that Puerto Ricans dip the chocolate pieces and cheese in the hot chocolate. They drink the hot chocolate, after the chocolate pieces melt and the cheese softens and then eat/drink the softened cheese. What an interesting way to have hot chocolate!
